With nine staggered masts, twelve massive silk sails, and a complicated system for steering, the Treasure Ships could travel at eight knots per hour. Colorful paintings, bronze cannons, and elaborate carvings covered the length of each ship. Each Treasure Ship was like a city. Sailors slept on the lowest level, where the trade goods were kept. The middle level housed the kitchen, quarters for the officers, and an altar where prayers were spoken daily. The top level included a deck and an observation post used to calculate the ships’ location.
The travelers watched wayang plays, in which a performer unrolled a painted scroll while telling a story. They could not understand the words but were impressed that the audience laughed and cried while listening to the tale. They also witnessed tiger battles and jousting contests. Predictable winds made sailing in the Indonesian islands relatively easy. Over time, trade links developed with China, India, and Africa. With riches of gold, incense, and spices, Indonesia became an important center for trade.
