If this happened, we would expect to see creationism making its way into the frontier of science, as the evidence appeared. Finally, probably after a good deal of controversy, it might enter the core of science. However, creationism did not follow this pattern. First, very little new evidence was produced by the creationists themselves. Second, they attempted to have their theory promoted from the scientific scrap-heap directly into the scientific core by legislation. That is, decisions about what was reliably known in science were to be made, not by scientists but by politicians responding to political pressure.

For these two reasons alone – the different aims of creation science and the unalterable status of its theory – we are justified in saying that creation science is not science. It is something quite different. This is exactly what was concluded by Judge William Overton in an Arkansas court case concerning creation science. Judge Overton discussed the nature of science, in terms similar to (but more complex than) those outlined here, and concluded that creation science was not scientific at all (Overton 1984).
