59 During the first part of the group’s hour-long set, all but overwhelmed by the potent dose of mescaline he had ingested, Carlos struggled mightily to focus on the music. “When I see it on TV, it’s like another guy playing,” he says of the concert Fame today. “He was trying to get in there, dealing with the electric snake. ”60 Not until the final song of the set, a long and fiery instrumental jam called “Soul Sacrifice,” did Carlos finally feel back in control of his thoughts and body. As it turned out, the band’s performance of “Soul Sacrifice” would be one of the festival’s highlights.

47 “When he said that,” Santana recalled more than three decades later, “I thought that a person was seeing right through me for the first time. . He made me aware that I have this potential. He gave me a quantum leap right there. . ”48 CARLOS’ BIG BREAK After his conversation with Knudson, Carlos began spending more time than ever at the Fillmore, studying the guitar playing techniques of performers such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. One Sunday afternoon in the spring of 1966, he and Stan Marcum went to the Fillmore to hear another of Carlos’ favorite guitarists, Michael Bloomfield of the Butterfield Blues Band.

I don’t recommend it to anybody and everybody, yet for me I felt [taking psychedelics] did wonders. ”58 Not “splendor and rapture” but raw terror was what Carlos was feeling after he swallowed the mescaline that August afternoon, however. Just as the drug was starting to take effect, Carlos was informed that the band would have to go on immediately. After a long night of driving rain followed by a brutally hot and humid morning, the hundreds of thousands of high school and college students who had jammed into the concert site’s muddy pastures and fields were cranky and impatient.
