In taking this direction, he was influenced by the work of the Presentation Sisters for the education of poor girls. Soon the order spread throughout Ireland, opening similar schools for poor boys in various major centers of population. The work extended to include not only primary, but also secondary and technical education, besides running orphanages and a school for the deaf. From Ireland, the order spread to Liverpool and other parts of England. By the second half of the nineteenth century, communities had been opened in Australia, Newfoundland, Gibraltar, New Zealand, and India, and early in the twentieth century the order had a presence in Rome and the United States.

Currently, around 100 Presentation Brothers live in Ireland, England, Canada, Ghana, St. Lucia, and Grenada. Another small Irish order is that of the Patrician Brothers, whose official title is the Brothers of Saint Patrick. This order was founded by Dr. Daniel Delany, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, at Tullow, County Carlow, Ireland, in 1808. From here, schools were established in various parts of the country, and in Sydney and Madras. In 1893, the order became directly responsible to Rome rather than to local Catholic bishops.

This put pressure on the church to reach a more favorable accommodation with the state in order to start appointing and paying large numbers of lay teachers. The eventual outcome was the 1975 “Integration Act,” which was well received by the church. It laid out conditions under which a school could be admitted to the state system of education, while maintaining the right to give effect to its traditions and beliefs, including the teaching of religion. 71 This accommodation took place at the very time the religious orders’ presence in the schools, including that of teaching brothers, began to seriously decline.
