FIRST VOYAGES King Francis I (r. 1515–1547) ﬁrst hired the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano to sail westward in search of the Northwest Passage.
They were to make a proﬁt for the owners of the company. The settlers could not devote as much time to their proﬁtmaking responsibilities as the company wanted, however. They were too busy simply trying to stay alive. Unfortunately for the Jamestown settlers, a ship carrying supplies for the colony was shipwrecked in Bermuda in July 1609. When Sir Thomas Gates and the other survivors of the shipwreck ﬁnally arrived in Jamestown in 1610, they found only 60 of the original colonists alive. The others had perished during the “starving time,” the harsh winter of 1609–1610.
