Because of ongoing wars in Europe, France did not turn to overseas exploration until after 1500. By that time, France was a major European power and began vying with rivals England and Spain for overseas land and wealth. FIRST VOYAGES King Francis I (r. 1515–1547) first hired the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano to sail westward in search of the Northwest Passage.

They were to make a profit for the owners of the company. The settlers could not devote as much time to their profitmaking responsibilities as the company wanted, however. They were too busy simply trying to stay alive. Unfortunately for the Jamestown settlers, a ship carrying supplies for the colony was shipwrecked in Bermuda in July 1609. When Sir Thomas Gates and the other survivors of the shipwreck finally arrived in Jamestown in 1610, they found only 60 of the original colonists alive. The others had perished during the “starving time,” the harsh winter of 1609–1610.

Meeting with the Iroquois Even before the British were forced to flee from the Ohio Valley, several of their colonial leaders were trying to find a way to meet the French and Indian threat. In June 1754, delegates from seven colonies met with about 150 Iroquois leaders in Albany, New York. The British colonial leaders tried to persuade the Iroquois, who were bitter enemies of the French, to join in an alliance with the British colonists against the French and their Indian allies. The Iroquois, however, left the meeting without making any promises to the British.
